Touch the Sky, Look the Sun Straight in the Eye and Laugh

"Touch the sky, look the sun straight in the eye and laugh." Linda Ellerbee

When I look up to the sky on a sunny but cloudy day, you could almost touch all the clouds here in Hawaii. So soft and dreamy.

And in the morning when I wake up early to see the sun rise, I can actually look at the glowing red globe as it makes its morning arch from the horizon drawing straight up to the sky...greeting the earth below in our tropical gardens.

Yes, I love living here,  I laugh at the sky and the sun all by myself this morning, life is good today.

Viva La France

Cooking and dining here in East Hawaii can be limited in terms of continental cuisine, but when our international cook group gathers to create a festive meal like french night, everything is over the top and everyone wants to wear their sparkles and glitter.

Would you like to try some of the hors D'oeuvre, they are ready to be sampled. How about a fresh tapenade or just made steak tartare?

Here's a select sample of the fare for the night, would you like a plate for yourself.  Pace yourself, there's alot to sample at each station.

Can you tell that everyone is getting in the mood, a la francais ce soir . You can even sing La Marseillaise, if you remember all the verse.

A beret and glass of french wine is just the right way to start of the evening, nice scarf too!

Its time to make the crepes with fresh and locally purveyed fruits and fillings from our tropical gardens.

La grande finale....everyone jump in the pool with your clothes on or off, its optional!

Thank you for coming, our host Ron bids you adieu until the next dining event.

Time for a Beach Camp Out in Hawaii

It was quite a hectic last week filled with so many activities, chores and errands, I was really looking forward to getting away to the south part of Hawaii Island to relax and enjoy a beach camp out.

Whittington beach is a lovely bay with fish ponds that lead into the protected bay and is an idyllic camping spot.  I set up my little pup tent right up to the edge of the grassy area so I could hear the waves crashing at night time and have some lovely views of the bay.

It was mid-week so fortunately we were the only one's camping outside of a few day trippers enjoying the tide pools and fish ponds, scouting around to discover any sea life.

Unfortunately the windy and rainy conditions prevented any desire to actually go into the water and I was really anticipating snorkeling here since I heard that Whale sharks tend to congregate in this deep bay and there are alot of larger tropical fish just outside the fish pond.

We were fortunate enough to visit with this spear fisherman who collected quite a catch of beautifully colored parrot fish and he offered us a few of these fish for a barbeque. Let me tell you, just caught, these taste amazingly like a real fresh lobster, real ono (delicious) !

Even though it was windy, rainy and too cold to go into the water today, it was still nice to walk around the various parts of the pond and tide pools, visit with friends and prepare alot of delicious meals by the ocean. Decompressing at the beach is just the right thing to do after a crazy week and a wonderful way to enjoy our beaches.

Thanks for the visit and to visit other posts for thats my world go to http://showyourworld.blogspot.com/

A Rainy Day Celebration

It was a rainy day in Hilo with high winds, intense downpours, sunny skies and then a remix of everything.

In spite of all these changes, we still cherish the rain and put on a good parade and the rest of us stayed covered in our pop-ups.

Parades in Hawaii are all about color, color and color oh yes did I also mention the aloha attire is mandatory gear?

All the antique cars display amazing tropical flowers from our local nuseries and add exotic color!

This is our local marching band with their aloha gear, putting up a good show in spite of the rain.

Pau riders in all their splendid leis and elaborate ornamentation always steal the show and the smiles are genuinely shared.

Even the horsey dung carts are sweetly decorated and have happy smiles!

Now you know this is a real Hawaiian parade when they include a marching band just with ukule players, giving the shaka (local hand aloha gestures)

Boy the ladies in red hats know what color to wear today and how to make everyone cheer for these volunteers!

Miss Kau coffee is putting out some sweet smiles, Kau coffee is becoming as popular as Kona coffee in the coffee world.

Oh okay, a few more pau riders, yes they are my favorite and really show us aloha, Each rider wears colors and flowers specifically to their islands and their leis are handmade with local foliage and flowers.

Canoe clubs are celebrated here and wood canoes are the traditional way of racing. They are prized and also used for parades...these types of canoes are very rare to produce nowadays.

Even little dogs like to show off their aloha and wear their leis for a big parade.

Aloha and thanks for watching our celebration of the Merrie Monarch Parade highlights, I hope you enjoyed your visit to hilo town.

Pau Riders in Verticle

Photo Hunt Challenge - Verticle

The Pau Rider's come to the Merrie Monarch Festival to march in one of the most spectacular parades in Hawaii today.

They come festooned with beautiful and huge cascading leis for their horses and for each rider's, elaborate head and neck ornamentation.

The colors of the gowns and native flowers reference the local origins of their particular islands.

Photo Hunt Challenge - Sweet

Photo hunt challenge Sweet

You've never smelled anything so intoxicating and sweet as a flower stand in Hawaii during the Merrie Monarch Festival.  Its almost impossible to not stop by these amazing display's of color and dazzling combinations of leis on display.

Then you get hit with hints of exotic smells of plumeria, ginger and unusual fragrances that draw you in and welcome you....you must stop and look at these leis and see the loving hands that crafted each and everyone on of them.

You need to see and smell almost everyone before you decide which one will be perfect...not an easy decision.

How about something exotic and blue like this blue lei made with many petals of the blue jade vine, a rare beauty only to be seen at this beautiful festival of aloha.

Yes to receive a lei from someone special is a wonderful gift...but giving one away is even more true
with the meaning of lei giving and sharing your aloha.
